Friedrich-Ebert Bridge closure in Bonn triggers indefinite A565 shutdown and major detours

Bonn bridge closure: Friedrich-Ebert Bridge (A565) closed indefinitely after structural damage, prompting major detours, traffic chaos and high economic costs.

The Friedrich-Ebert Bridge in Bonn has been closed indefinitely after inspectors found structural damage, triggering a full shutdown of the A565 crossing and immediate traffic restrictions. The Bonn bridge closure will force large-scale detours for commuters, freight operators and long-distance traffic while authorities assess and secure the damaged sections. Local officials and business groups warned of severe regional disruption and economic consequences as emergency measures are deployed.

Full closure ordered after emergency bridge inspections

The Autobahn GmbH announced a sudden, full closure of the Friedrich-Ebert Bridge following bridge inspections that identified structural defects in the Vorlandträger on the left bank of the Rhine. The company said the defects required “unverzügliche Sicherung” — an immediate securing of the structure — and that prior restrictions for heavy vehicles were insufficient to prevent further deterioration. The decision was taken on short notice on a Wednesday afternoon, leaving commuters and logistics firms to adapt rapidly.

Extent of traffic affected on A565 and adjacent link roads

The 1967-built bridge, which forms part of the A565, is a key east–west arterial for the Bonn and Rhein-Sieg region and normally carries about 120,000 vehicles per day. In addition to the span itself, several A565 sections between the Bonn-Nord interchange and the Bonn-Nordost junction have been closed or had connections suspended. Motorists can no longer use certain ramps from the A59 toward Koblenz, and a range of link movements at the Bonn-Nord interchange are currently blocked.

Detours push traffic toward Cologne and southern Rhine crossings

With the Friedrich-Ebert Bridge out of service, long-distance traffic will be diverted either south across the Konrad-Adenauer Bridge on the A562 or north via the Rodenkirchener Bridge on the A4 near Cologne. Authorities and mobility experts warn that rerouting large volumes of traffic into Cologne will place additional strain on an already congested network. Emergency route planning is being coordinated with regional traffic control centers to manage peak flows and reduce bottlenecks where possible.

ADAC study quantifies distance and economic impacts

The ADAC has described the Bonn bridge closure as a “total catastrophe for the region” and cited figures from a modelling study estimating annual additional travel of roughly 50 million kilometres for passenger cars and 5.5 million kilometres for trucks. The motoring association also estimated a macroeconomic loss in excess of €170 million if traffic displacement persists, underlining the broader cost of lost time, higher fuel consumption and delayed freight deliveries. These projections were cited to highlight the scale of disruption beyond local traffic patterns.

Local government and business leaders demand rapid action

Bonn’s mayor, Guido Déus (CDU), convened a Task Force Nordbrücke to coordinate the municipal response to the closures and to work with federal and state agencies on mitigation measures. The Bonn/Rhein-Sieg Chamber of Commerce (IHK) called the event a “catastrophe message” and said the bridge closure severs a vital lifeline for local commerce. IHK President Stefan Hagen urged the Autobahn GmbH and political leaders to accelerate planning for an additional Rhine crossing that had previously been scheduled for the 2030s.

Calls for federal intervention and accelerated replacement plans

Business groups have urged that the Nordbrücke replacement become a federal priority, explicitly asking that Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder take direct responsibility for speeding delivery. The IHK has demanded that “all levers” be pulled to bring forward the new Rhine crossing, arguing the current emergency demonstrates the strategic importance of resilient river infrastructure. The Autobahn GmbH has indicated that further structural assessments and securing work will determine repair options, timelines and any interim traffic solutions.

Emergency inspections and remedial engineering measures are now the immediate focus while authorities work to map out detours and preserve freight continuity. Traffic management centers are advising drivers to expect longer travel times and to avoid routing around Bonn where possible. The coming days will be crucial to gauge the full extent of the damage, timeline for repairs or replacement, and the regional economic effects of the closure.
